Our Story

From the Field to a Registered Firm

The roots of W & J Surveyors trace back to 1975, when Mr. D.L.D.Y. Wijewardena — Registered Licensed Surveyor, Courts Commissioner & Valuer — established a surveying practice in Hatton, Nuwara Eliya District.

Mr. E. Jeyachandran (B.Sc. Surveying Sciences, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka; Associate Member, Surveyors' Institute of Sri Lanka) interned at Access Engineering PLC in 2006, then joined Mr. Wijewardena that same year. Over the next decade he built deep expertise working on major projects — Upper Kotmale Hydro Power with Maeda Corporation (2007–2009), Upper Kotmale Lot 2 with Maeda-Nishimatsu JV (2009–2011), and the Hatton-Nuwaraeliya Road A7 project for the Road Development Authority (2011–2015).

In 2015 and 2017 he completed topographic survey subcontracts in Uganda (Sindila & Kyambura Hydro Power Projects). In 2016 he began independent freelance practice, growing to 100+ clients. In 2022 he officially registered W & J Surveyors (Pvt) Ltd, operating from a head office in Hatton and a branch office at the DKW Commercial Complex, Hatton.

In 2023, W & J Surveyors expanded to a third country — Malawi — with a proposal for the 40MW Mbongozi Hydro Power Project in Kasungu District, further establishing an international reputation in hydro power surveying.

Our Journey

Company Timeline

1975

Mr. D.L.D.Y. Wijewardena established a surveying practice in Hatton, Nuwara Eliya District, Sri Lanka.

2006

Mr. E. Jeyachandran (B.Sc. Surveying Sciences) interned at Access Engineering PLC and joined Mr. Wijewardena. Career begins on major hydro power and road projects.

2007–2011

Worked on Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Project (Lots 1 & 2) with Maeda Corporation and Maeda-Nishimatsu JV, Talawakelle.

2011–2015

Surveyor on the Hatton–Nuwara Eliya Road Project (A7) for Road Development Authority — 33 km road survey.

2015 & 2017

Completed topographic survey subcontracts in Uganda: Sindila Hydro Power Project (2015) and Kyambura Hydro Power Project (2017).

2016

Started independent freelance surveying practice. Grew to 100+ clients across Sri Lanka. Member, Surveyors' Institute of Sri Lanka (SISL) from January 2020.

2022

Officially registered W & J Surveyors (Pvt) Ltd. Head office in Hatton + branch office at the DKW Commercial Complex, Hatton.

2023

Expanded to Malawi — proposal submitted for 40MW Mbongozi Hydro Power Project, Kasungu District. 3rd country served.

Today

Chairman

Registered Licensed Surveyor, Court Commissioner & Valuer, and Chartered Member of the Surveyors’ Institute of Sri Lanka. Mr. Wijewardena established the firm’s original surveying practice in Hatton in 1975 and brings more than six decades of land and engineering surveying experience — from the Maskeliya Oya hydro projects to private practice.

Chartered Architect and Construction Project Manager with over 25 years’ experience leading major infrastructure and building projects, including large-scale works with the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO). He also serves as a Visiting Lecturer in Construction Management at the University of Moratuwa, and joined the W & J board in 2023.
